apostle pauls resume (One of many Bible articles on the Wielding the Sword of the Spirit web site at www.matthewmcgee.org ) Home Page * Copyright Policy * Feedback. Chronology of history of translation, Apostle Paul's Journeys and what is montage, Epistles Matthew McGee. An understanding of the history of translation, chronological order of events in Paul's ministry can be very valuable as a tool for the study of Acts and Paul's epistles. The book of Acts and the epistles of Paul sometimes tell us the length of time between one event and another. However, determining the year in which an event took place can require some research. It is most helpful to know the year of the beginning or end of the reigns of political rulers that are mentioned in the text. Some of the more helpful dates in survival sickest questions, studying the events in Paul's ministry are the history, death of King Aretas of Syria in 40 AD, the beginning of the reign of Claudius Caesar as Emperor of Rome in 41 AD, the death of Forgiveness Bible Essay, Herod Agrippa I in 44 AD, the succession of Felix's reign as Procurator in Judea by Porcius Festus in 60 AD. Of Translation! Here is a summary of the years of Paul's journeys and his epistles. The detailed chronology follows this section.

I have also included a map of Paul's journeys below since this article refers to so many different geographical locations. All of the major cities are identified, but you may wish to look on a more detailed map of Paul's journeys as well. Such a map may be found in the back of many Bibles and in some encyclopedias. The table below lists, as accurately as I have been able to determine, the years of Paul's journeys and imprisonments. On Jane Austen: An Exceptional And Inspirational Writer! Paul at Damascus. Imprisonment in Judea.

Imprisonment in Rome. The table below lists, as accurately as I have been able to determine, the years in which Paul wrote his epistles. The crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of of translation, Jesus Christ occurred in the spring of 32 AD. Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) Stoning of Stephen (Acts 7:59) In about 37 AD , Jesus Christ speaks to Saul (Paul) on the road to Damascus. Paul is led blind to Damascus (Acts 9:8). After the Successful Essay, visit by history, Ananias, Paul then goes to Arabia and returns to Damascus where he spends 3 years (Galatians 1:17-18 and Acts 9:22-23). In 37 AD King Aretas took control of Damascus when Emperor Tiberius Caesar died. What Is Montage! Paul departed from Damascus at night, being let down from the of translation, city wall in what is montage, a basket (Acts 9:25 and 2 Corinthians 11:32). This could not have been after 40 AD , the year that King Aretas died. Paul met with Barnabas, Peter, and of translation, James in Jerusalem (Acts 9:26 and Galatians 1:18-19). Paul in Caesarea and Tarsus (Acts 9:30) Peter goes to house of Cornelius (Acts 10) Barnabas gets Paul and they stay in Antioch (Syria) for one year (Acts 11:26).

This must be between 41 AD (beginning of Claudius Caesar's reign) and 44 AD (Acts 11:28). Believers are first called Christians at Antioch. James, brother of John, killed by Herod Agrippa I (Acts 12:2). Herod Agrippa I dies in 44 AD (Acts 12:23). The first journey begins when Paul, Barnabas, and Mark set out from Antioch (Acts 13:4). This journey started after 44 AD and middle colonies, ended a long time (Acts 14:28) before 50 AD. They left Antioch for Seleucia and sailed to history of translation Cyprus, large island 100 miles off Syrian coast. There they went to on Jane Austen: An Exceptional and Inspirational Salamis and Paphos where Paul met Bar-Jesus the sorcerer. (Acts 13:4-6). Then they sail to Perga in history of translation, Pamphylia, which is now southern Turkey.

From here, Mark returns to Jerusalem. At Antioch in Pisidia (not to be confused with the one in Syria), Paul and Barnabas turn to the Gentiles (Acts 13:46). Then it was on to Iconium, where they abode a long time (Acts 14:3), Lystra, where Paul stoned, but lives (Acts 14:19), and Derbe. Then they retraced their steps back through Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch (in Pisidia) (Acts 14:21). What Is Montage! Paul and Barnabas went throughout Pisidia, Pamphylia, then to Perga, Attalia, and sailed back to Antioch in Syria (Acts 14:24-26) The first journey ends in Antioch, Syria, where Paul and Barnabas stay there a long time (Acts 14:28). The dates for history the events from 50-60 AD are found by the pity of war, counting backwards from the succession of Felix's reign as Procurator in Judea by Porcius Festus in 60 AD.

Should one want to check these dates for accuracy, one should start at 60 AD and work backwards. In about 50 AD, Paul and Barnabas go to the council in Jerusalem 14 years after Paul's conversion (Galatians 2:1-9 and Acts 15:2). Judas and Silas return to Antioch (Syria) with Barnabas and Paul where they continued some days (Acts 15:35-36), possibly in the winter of history, 50-51 AD. The second journey begins, possibly in the spring of 51 AD. Paul takes Silas through Syria and Cilicia (now southeastern Turkey).

They came to Globalization Essay Derbe and Lystra, where they find Timothy, who goes with Paul and history, Silas throughout Phrygia and Galatia. But they are forbidden by Forgiveness in the Bible, the Spirit to go into history Asia or Bithynia. What Is Montage! They passed through Mysia to Troas, the island of Samothracia, and then to Neapolis in Macedonia (now northern Greece). At Philippi, God opens the heart of Lydia and the Philippian jailer (Acts 16:14-34). Passing through Amphipolis and Appolonia, they came to Thessalonica, where Paul taught for 3 weeks. After teaching some in Berea, Paul departed ahead of Silas and Timothy, southward into history Achaia (now southern Greece), to Athens, possibly for the winter of 51-52 AD (Acts 17:14-15). Paul then makes his first visit to Corinth where he stays a year and a half (Acts 18:1, 5, 11). This may have been from the spring of 52 AD to the pity of war the fall of 53 AD. History! Here, Paul met Aquila and Priscilla, who had just come from Rome, from Successful Essay which Claudius Caesar had banished all Jews. Silas and Timothy rejoin Paul.

First Thessalonians was written from here in history of translation, about 52 AD (1 Thessalonians 3:1-2, 6). We know that it was written from Corinth, and not from Athens, because Silas and Timothy had already rejoined Paul (1 Thessalonians 1:1 and Acts 18:5). Second Thessalonians was also written from middle colonies Corinth. History! We know that it was soon after the first letter, because like the first letter, Silas was with Paul when second Thessalonians was written. After Paul leaves Corinth, there is no further mention of Silas traveling with Paul. Paul left by what is montage, boat with Aquila and Priscilla to Cenchrea and then across the of translation, Aegean Sea to Ephesus. Aquila and Forgiveness in the, Priscilla stay there where they would later meet Apollos (Acts 18:19 and 26). Paul sails on of translation, to Caesarea and then goes up to Antioch in middle colonies, Syria, where the second journey ends . Paul stayed a while (Acts 18:23). Of Translation! This may have been the middle colonies, winter of 53-54 AD. The third journey begins with Galatia (central region of Turkey) possibly in the spring of 54 AD and then Phrygia (Acts 18:23).

Then Paul arrives at Ephesus where he stayed for of translation 3 years (Acts 20:31) probably from the fall of 54 AD to the fall of in the, 57 AD. Paul meets disciples of of translation, John the Baptist. He preached in the synagogue for 3 months (Acts 19:8). He disputed daily in the school of Tyrannus for 2 years (Acts 19:9-10), so that all that dwelt in Asia heard the word. Paul sent Timothy and Erastus ahead into Macedonia, but Paul stayed in Asia for what is montage a season (Acts 19:22). Of Translation! Paul wrote 1 Corinthians near the end of this stay in Ephesus (1 Corinthians 16:8,19), probably in 57 AD. It was not written with Timothy, who Paul had sent ahead into Macedonia (Acts 19:22). Paul foresaw his route of travel for the next four or so years in Acts 19:21-22. This agrees with his plans in 1 Corinthians 16:1, 3, 5, 8-10.

Note how the the pity of war, great door opened to Paul and many adversaries in verse 9 compares with the events in the Ephesian amphitheater in Acts 19:23-41. In 1 Corinthians 3:6, Paul says Apollos watered . This refers to Apollos teaching in Corinth when Paul was at Ephesus (Acts 19:1). Paul had rejoined Timothy when Second Corinthians was written (2 Corinthians 1:1). Paul had come to history Troas and continued to Macedonia (2 Corinthians 2:12-13 and 7:5), where he was joined by Globalization, Titus (2 Corinthians 7:6 13), which seems to correspond to Acts 20:1. Of Translation! Paul also talks of a third visit to Corinth in 2 Corinthians 13:1 and sickest, 12:14.

So Second Corinthians was most likely written in history of translation, the fall of 57 AD from somewhere in Macedonia (northern Greece), possibly at Philippi. In 2 Corinthians 12:1-4, Paul says 14 years ago I ascended into heaven. From 57, going back 14 years to 43 AD, this puts us back before Paul's first journey, probably when he was at Antioch in Syria. The Pity Of War! After going through Macedonia (northern Greece), Paul came to Achaia (southern Greece) where he stayed 3 months (Acts 20:2-3), making third visit to history of translation Corinth. This is where he spent the winter of 57-58 AD (1 Corinthians 16:5-8). Romans was written at this time (Rom 15:23-26 and 1 Corinthians 16:1-3). Going back to Macedonia (Acts 20:1), they were at Philippi (northeastern Greece) in Forgiveness, spring of 58 AD in the days of unleavened bread (Acts 20:6). Then they sailed to Troas, where a young man fell out of a window, and Paul raises him from the dead (Acts 20:7-12).

Then Paul went to Assos, Mitylene, Chios, Samos, Trogylium, and Miletus (now in southwestern Turkey). From here, Paul addresses Ephesian elders whom he had called to meet him (Acts 20:17-38) in the spring of 58 AD (Acts 20:16). Sailing to history Coos, Rhodes, Patara, and passing on the south side of Cyprus, they came to Tyre (which is now in Lebanon) where they stayed one week. Then they went south to Ptolemais and to Caesarea where they stayed many days (Acts 21:10). Then Paul goes to Jerusalem, where the third journey ends. Successful Essay! Here let us pause to look at the question: When was Galatians written?

Galatians was written when Paul was not in prison and when neither Silas or Timothy were with him (Galatians 1:1). It was written after the council in Jerusalem (Acts 15:1-32 and Galatians 2:1-10) and history of translation, after Paul's second visit to the region on his second journey in about 51 AD (Acts 16:1-6). Since they were so soon removed from grace (Galatians 1:6), it must have been before the prison years of the pity of war, 58-63 AD. So it could have been written when Paul was alone in Athens in the winter of 51-52 AD, which would make it Paul's first letter. But this is unlikely, since Paul was only in of translation, Athens a short time (Acts 17:15).

Or it could have been written from Forgiveness in the Essay Antioch between Paul's second and third journeys in the winter of 53-54 AD (Acts 18:22-23). But this is also unlikely because Paul would have probably mentioned that he would be coming to them soon on his third journey. It could have been written from Corinth in history, the winter of of the sickest questions, 57-58 where Paul wrote Romans. But most likely, it was written from Ephesus during Paul's 3 years there from 54-57. Paul had recently passed through the region of Galatia . strengthening all the disciples . (Acts 18:23) and spent far more time in Ephesus where he could have gotten the unfavorable report about the churches in Galatia (Galatians 1:6) which was relatively nearby. The third journey ends at Jerusalem in history of translation, 58 AD . Paul is beaten by Jews, preaches to them (Acts 22:1-21), and Successful Globalization Essay, is brought before Sanhedrin. Jesus Christ tells Paul that he will go to bear him witness in Rome. Many Jews vow to kill Paul (Acts 23:12). In 58 AD , Paul is taken to of translation Governor Felix (reigned 53-60) at Caesarea, many years (Acts 24:10) after 53 AD and 2 years before end Felix's reign.

Paul then spends 2 years in the pity of war, prison in Caesarea in Judea. In 60 AD , Governor Portius Festus reign begins. Paul appeals to Caesar (Acts 25:11). Some days pass, then Herod Agrippa II hears Paul. The voyage to Rome begins : Paul, still a prisoner, sails to history of translation Sidon with Luke and middle colonies, Aristarchus (Acts 27:1-2) on the way to of translation Italy.

They sailed to Myra (now southern Turkey) and on to Lasea, on large island of Crete, 50 miles southeast of Greece, where much time was spent (Acts 27:7-13). What Is Montage! In the fall of history of translation, 60 AD , they reached Melita, a small island south of Sicily. Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake but lived. Paul healed the father of Publius and others. Paul (still captive) spends the winter of 60-61 AD (Acts 28:11) on the pity of war, island with his captors . In the spring, they sailed on to Syracuse (on island of Sicily), then to Rhegium (on the southern tip of Italy), then to Puteoli (on the western coast of Italy). History! The voyage to Forgiveness Essay Rome ends: Paul spends 2 years in his own hired house (Acts 28:30) as a prisoner in Rome from 61-63 AD . During this time he wrote Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. In about 62 AD, Paul wrote Ephesians before Timothy came to him (Ephesians 1:1) while in prison in Rome (Ephesians 3:1, 4:1, and 6:20). Also in about 62 AD, Paul wrote Philippians from prison (Philippians 1:7) in Rome (4:23) with Timothy (1:1). Paul wrote Colossians from prison (Colossians 4:18) in Rome in about 62 AD with Timothy (1:1) and fellow prisoner, Aristarchus (4:10). Of Translation! Paul, with Timothy, wrote Philemon from prison in 63 AD (Philemon 1:1). Paul after the imprisonment in Rome: We know that Paul had further journeys after he was released from the survival of the, prison in Rome in 63 AD.

After his release, he wrote the epistles of Hebrews, Titus, First Timothy, and Second Timothy, not necessarily in that order, although Second Timothy was apparently his last. This took place after the events recorded in of translation, Acts, so all of survival, our information comes from various statements that Paul makes in history, his letters. In them are clues that Paul may have traveled to Forgiveness some or all of the following places: Colosse, Spain, Corinth, Miletus, Troas, Crete, Nicopolis, Philippi, Italy, Judea, Ephesus, and Macedonia . This allows for the possibility that Paul traveled to about as many diverse places as in all of his previous journeys combined. There are probably several possible ways that one could reconstruct the sequence of these travels which would not disagree with scripture. Since I do not know which one would be correct, I will just list what I know about the journeys. Thus, the references below are not intended to be chronological, although they all occurred after Paul's release from prison in 63 AD. In Philemon 22, Paul foresaw his release and tells those in history of translation, Colosse to prepare him lodging.

We know that Philemon was written to the Colossians because of Archippus (Colossians 4:17 and what is montage, Philemon 2), Onesimus (Colossians 4:9 and of translation, Philemon 9-10), and others (Colossians 4:10-14 and Globalization, Philemon 23-25). Also, while in history of translation, prison in Rome Paul wrote to those in the pity of war, Philippi that he may be coming to visit them (Philippians 1:26). In Romans 1:10, 15:24 and 28, and 16:1, 3, and 5 Paul speaks of aspirations of eventually going to Spain . Did he ever do this in his final years? The Bible does not say whether he did or not. We do however have the account of the first century author, Clement of Rome, regarding Paul. After preaching both in the east and west, he gained the illustrious reputation due to his faith, having taught righteousness to the whole world, and come to history of translation the extreme limit of the west , and Essay, suffered martyrdom under the prefects ( The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians , Chapter 5).

The extreme limit of the west very well could be Spain. History! At some time after being released from the prison in survival of the, Rome, Paul went to Corinth and Miletus (2 Timothy 4:20). He also went to Troas (2 Timothy 4:13), Crete (Titus 1:5), and Nicopolis for the winter (Titus 3:12). Paul leaving Titus in Crete must have been during a period of liberty after Paul's imprisonment in Rome ended in 63 AD. Paul did not go there during the first 3 journeys. There is no mention of Titus or of any preaching on Crete in Acts 27:7-13, on history of translation, the voyage to Rome. Paul says he will send Artemas or Tychicus to middle colonies Titus. He tells Titus to come to Nicopolis where Paul has determined to winter (Titus 3:12). The letter to history Titus was probably written around 64-65 AD. There are three cities called Nicopolis: (1) in Achaia (southern Greece), most likely the survival of the, one to history of translation which Paul was referring, (2) 15 miles west of Jerusalem, and (3) in the area that is middle colonies, now Romania.

The book of Hebrews was apparently written from of translation Italy (Hebrews 13:24). Timothy had been released from prison (Hebrews 13:23) and was coming to Paul. Paul was apparently at liberty as well, since they planned to then go to visit the survival sickest questions, Hebrews. Of Translation! This could have been in Judea , as Paul says, . ye had compassion of me in my bonds . (Hebrews 10:34). This must have been in reference to Paul's imprisonment in Caesarea from 58-60 AD. Hebrews was probably written around 64-65 AD. Paul had told Timothy to stay and teach in Ephesus when Paul went to Macedonia (1 Timothy 1:3). During the third journey, Paul had done the opposite, staying in Ephesus himself, and sending Timothy with Erastus to Macedonia (Acts 19:22).

So First Timothy was written around 64-65 AD during a period of liberty after Paul's Roman imprisonment of 61-63 AD. Paul said he was hoping to come to Forgiveness in the Essay Timothy in Ephesus shortly, but may have to tarry long (1 Timothy 3:14-15). Timothy was in Ephesus where he received both First Timothy and Second Timothy (1 Timothy 1:3, 2 Timothy 1:16-18, 4:14, 4:19, Acts 19:33, and 1 Timothy 1:20). Second Timothy was apparently written from prison (2 Timothy 1:8) with Paul ready to die (2 Timothy 4:6-8), possibly about 66 AD. History! Yet he asks Timothy to come to him before winter (2 Timothy 4:9 and Globalization, 21). Paul was probably martyred sometime around 67 AD. History Of Translation! Copyright #169 1998 Matthew McGee.

Then in 2003 Rick took over the reins himself and set out on a path of history, development and growth that took the level of participation from less than 100 to consistently over Forgiveness Bible Essay, the 200 mark (250 this year). Along the way, Rick fixed the history name and date of the run to coincide with Canada Day on July 1. In earlier years the run was tied in with the middle colonies last weekend of Riverfest, late June or early July. The event became a colourful - appropriately red - joyful celebration of history, our national holiday. The presence of the young kids in Christie Reitsma's long running 1K brought an additional family flavour to the whole day. Rick was also innovative in terms of the race commemorative running gear he provided. In place of the traditional t-shirt, we had a special club singlet one year and hats another.

Rick also negotiated a deal with Scott McNamee at Crank's Bicycle Shoppe, who generously supplied at Globalization a discount top of the line running shoes as prizes over history, a few years. In recent years Rick, with the help of the Wynands family, secured the sponsorship of local area Dairy Farmer organizations. Rick steered us calmly and the pity of war, competently through a number of challenges over the years: runners had to skirt around vendor pop-ups on Water Street, compete with the deafening noise from the power boat regatta, relocate because of the Artisan Village and then last year deal with the construction of the new skateboard facility just off of the Brock Trail. In sum, Rick has been a powerhouse of a race director for the Canada Day Run. History Of Translation? Of course, he also jumped in at survival sickest the start of the 5K almost every year and history, tossed off one of those hugely impressive, senior's sub-20 minute or just over 20 minute runs. Rick will be a hard act to follow as he finally steps down as race director. But we're confident there's someone or more out in the Bible Essay, there willing to take on the challenge and ensure the history of translation continued success of our Canada Day Run. We owe it to Rick. TISS Track Support - Win a KIA! The TISS Track Facility is without a doubt a huge asset to the health and the pity of war, wellness of our community!

resume spelled right You’ve reached one of the best sources for resume information anywhere. The discussion below, about the surprisingly intricate question of how to spell “resumé,” is just one example of how deeply I’ve gotten into every aspect of history of translation resumes. There’s a lot of information on middle colonies, this site that you won’t find put together in one place anywhere else. (Be sure to add it to your favorites.) Some of that information will change the of translation way you think about resumes—and make your job search a lot more successful and survival questions, a lot less worrisome. I don’t settle for the myths that the majority of resumé writers and advisersincluding some so-called “experts”have repeated endlessly for years without ever thinking to check them. Some of those mythslike the “functional resumé” or the one-page resumé for experienced peoplecan wreck your job search all by themselves. Read more about these “Killer Myths” on the Tips F.A.Q. page.

You’ll find the history #1 Resume Tip on that page especially helpful, too. The FAQ section of the Tips FAQ page takes you right to answers to some commonly asked questions. Look through the Resumé Glossary, with definitions and in-depth information about middle colonies resume terminology and technology. There’s also a unique guide to Shopping For Resume Services. Check the Testimonials page for comments from my clients about the difference my expertise makes.

And then take a look at the home page to start finding out history how I work. This expertise means that I can give exceptional value for your money, even compared to other resume services in the same price range. And the payback to you for that extra quality can be immense. All factors considered, I think “resumé” (one accent), though it has no historical basis, is the best spelling for middle colonies this word when used as an English word to history of translation refer to middle colonies a summary of history of translation someone’s qualifications for employment. This spelling has, in fact, become increasingly accepted over the last twenty or thirty years. “Resumé” in this sense is an English word, not a French one. Bible! It’s not pronounced like the French word. And it doesn’t even have this meaning in FrenchFrench, like British and International English, uses the Latin term “curriculum vitae,” or “CV” for short. (Both terms have a narrower sense in the U.S.) With both its pronunciation and its meaning changed, “resumé” can well be said to have become completely assimilated to English. Many other French words went the same route centuries ago, with the accents usually dropped. Since it’s not a French word (in this sense), the accents can be dispensed with unless they are necessary to show pronunciation.

But in this particular word, the accent over of translation the final -e is still necessary, to indicate pronunciation and to distinguish “resumé” from the verb “resume.” (In addition, the spelling with two accents is survival sickest questions awkward in English because, in history of translation, the English pronunciation, the first “é” stands for what is montage a different sound than does the second.) This is not a question the average job-seeker needs to sweat over. “Resumé” and “résumé” are always acceptable. “Resume” is of translation very widely accepted too, though it should be avoided in fields where language skills are highly valued. Austen: And Inspirational! Whichever spelling you prefer, make sure you use it consistently (except in the case of history e-mailssee below). But make sure you read the following important technical note: IN PLAIN TEXT IT’S SPELLED DIFFERENTLY . What Is Montage! . History! . At least in middle colonies, the U.S., accented characterslike the “é” in resuméshould never be used in plain-text documents, such as e-mails and of translation, Web forms. Since accented characters are not part of the ASCII character set that is middle colonies still a standard for much software in history of translation, the U.S., they sometimes get converted to other characters or combinations of characters, and show up as nonsense characters on the pity of war, the recipient’s end. In these documents, “resume,” without accents, is safest. It’s also best to avoid using accented characters in filenamesespecially if you’re sending the files to someone else.

HOW TO TYPE THE ACCENT. In Windows: In Word, you can type Ctl-' (that is, hold down the Control and apostrophe keys at of translation, the same time) and then press the ‘e’ key. In other Windows applications, use Alt-130 (that is, hold down the Alt key while typing 130 in the numeric keypad the all-numbers section on the right of most full-sized keyboards). On a Mac: Press Option-e and then press the ‘e’ key. Unix systems are less standardized in this respect. Try Compose-e-'. If your keyboard doesn’t have a Compose key, you can probably map that function to in the Bible Essay an existing key, such as right-Alt.

By the way, it’s an accent, not an apostrophe these are two completely different things. There’s one way to spell it that’s always totally wrong: with an apostrophe instead of an accent, like this: resume’. History! If you spell it with no accents (resume), well, that’s the only way to spell it in middle colonies, plain text, and in history, other cases, the reader will assume that you can’t be bothered to type the accent. Sickest! They may or may not downgrade you on that score. But if you spell it with an apostrophe instead of an accent, they’ll see that you don’t even know what the accent is. You don’t have to history sweat over the spelling of “resumé.” But as a professional writer I have to make a considered decision about which spelling to middle colonies use, and want to choose the of translation best if one is even a little better than the others.

When you start looking closely at Forgiveness in the Bible Essay, the question of how to spell the name of of translation that vital piece of paper, it gets rather more complicated than most spelling questions are, because there are an unusual number of in the factors involved. In this case, sorting out those factors, weighing them, and working out the best balance between them is a matter for painstaking thought by history of translation experienced professional language mechanics with some specialized linguistic knowledge. I’ve had my shot at it, and the conclusions above are based on that effort. In case you’re interested, I’ve written down the details below. THE WHOLE THING.

The spelling with two accents follows the French spelling, but in the case of “résumé,” that spelling is Essay Austen: and Inspirational Writer problematic when used by English-speakers, for history reasons given below. Omitting both the Globalization Essay accents follows the normal English practice with assimilated foreign words, but this, too, is problematic in the case of this particular word. The spelling with one accent, which offers a solution to both problems, seems to be a recent development that is history of translation increasingly accepted in English usage. Essay! Good English dictionaries in history of translation, the past generally gave “résumé” as the reference spelling, and recognized “resume” (no accents) as well. The Pity Of War! For instance, “resumé” isn’t found in the first edition of the Random House Dictionary (unabridged, 1966) or the full Oxford English Dictionary (2nd ed., 1989).

More recent editions of authoritative dictionaries ( Random House Dictionary , 2nd ed., 1987; American Heritage Dictionary , 3rd ed., 1992; and the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary , 5th ed., 2002) also recognize “resumé.” The fourth edition of the of translation American Heritage Dictionary (2000) gives “resumé” as the reference spelling. The Shorter Oxford notes that the spelling “resumé” (one accent) is particularly associated with the sense of a summary of employment qualifications, which sense is “chiefly North American.” The pronunciation “REH-zoo-may” is what is montage standard in English regardless of history spelling or sense. (French also places the primary stress on the first syllable, though the stress is not as noticeable as it is in English.) Good writers don’t depart from historical spelling without some strong reason that is widely recognized, and the pity of war, then only in those rare cases where there is no stronger reason for retaining the historical spelling. History Of Translation! The development of a consensus about such changes takes time, even when the questions are simple enough to be decided by the accumulation of decisions made on the fly by knowledgeable writers. In the case of the Austen: An Exceptional and Inspirational word “resumé,” however, there are an unusual number of conflicting factors bearing on the question. This complicates and slows down the evolutionary process.

Conscious, detached thought, and a bit of research, are required to sort out the issues decisively. At the same time, it’s not an urgent matter even for most language specialists. So it’s likely that few qualified people have ever sat down and of translation, tried to weigh all the factors and what is montage, find the best resolution to the conflicts. And in any case, it would take time for word to get around. This, perhaps, is why “resumé” is only shown in recent dictionaries. (The article on “résumé” at http://en.wiktionary.org/ is a good one. The postings I’ve seen on history of translation, Web discussion forums only demonstrate the inadequacy of casual opinions on this particular questionwhether they come from laymen or, worse, from the second-rate professionals who are the source of most of the middle colonies writings on language and history of translation, grammar seen by the public.

This includes some books that pass for style guides in some offices.) In the case of “resumé,” there is a strong reason for making a change from the what is montage historical spelling. Of Translation! As an English word, the spelling “résumé” seems inescapably awkward, given the what is montage actual English pronunciation of the word. Of Translation! That’s because writing two accents here gives conflicting cues to an English-speaker. With the English pronunciation, if the word is the pity of war spelled with two accents, the same sign represents two different sounds in the same wordin the first syllable, ‘é’ is pronounced like the short ‘e’ in bet, in the third syllable it is pronounced like the of translation long ‘a’ in “may.” (That sort of ambiguity, of course, is notoriously common with English spellingbut not within the same word, and not with written accents. “Résumé,” as far as I know, is the only word used in Forgiveness Bible, English that presents an history of translation, ambiguous case with written accents, so there is on Jane and Inspirational no group of similar cases that can constitute a generally accepted rule for pronunciation. A native familiarity with English spelling doesn’t help us in the case of relatively recent foreign borrowings like this.)

Furthermore, there is no strong reason for retaining the first accent in the English word. Except in foreign words and phrases (which are normally italicized in print), English never writes accents unless they are absolutely necessary to indicate pronunciation. The first accent in “résumé” is not reflected in the English pronunciation. If it were, I’d say “ray-zoo-may,” not “reh-zoo-may.” (If I were speaking French, I’d say “hray-zoo-may.”) Someone reading “résumé” knows, of course, how the word is pronounced. History Of Translation! But there’s still a hitch in what is montage, the reading while the signs are interpreted. If there are too many little hitches like this, they add up to a document that is difficult to read, which distracts the reader from the history of translation content and creates a bad impression.

Good writing eliminates such hitches wherever possiblebecause if they aren’t eliminated wherever possible, they quickly add up to bad writing. Therefore, when “resumé” is used as a fully assimilated English word, with a meaning it doesn’t have in French, we should feel free to dispense with the first accent. What Is Montage! The second accent, however, is still highly desirable for the purpose of distinguishing “resumé” from the verb “resume,” and more generally for of translation the purpose of indicating that, unlike most words in English with a final -e, the middle colonies final syllable is pronounced. History! (That’s why proper English spelling requires that we keep the French accent on in words like “café.”) Used in English for Essay on Jane Austen: this purpose, “resumé” is not a partial (and therefore incorrect) preservation of the French spelling. It is an ad hoc, unhistorical improvisation of the sort that has long been used in a few exceptional cases where historical spellings and normal spelling conventions yield results that are consistently felt as awkward even by practiced English-speakers. Another instance of such unhistorical improvisation that is history of translation sometimes seen is the what is montage spelling “uncoordinated” (with a diaeresis over the second ‘o’). Regular English spelling conventions call for “uncoordinated,” which, as with “coordinated,” suggests a wrong pronunciation (and makes an American think of light beer). The usual device of a hyphen (as in “co-ordinated”) yields “unco-ordinated.” This looks even worse than “uncoordinated” since, especially if one is being historically conscious, only history, prefixes allow the Forgiveness Bible option of hyphenation, because they are grammatically distinct. But unlike “co-,” “unco” is not a prefix. (As readers of Robert Burns know, it can stand alone as an history of translation, adjective or adverbbut that’s Scots, not standard English.) “Unco-” in “uncoordinated” is, to be sure, a joining of Forgiveness in the Bible Essay two prefixes.

But since combinations of two prefixes are somewhat unusual, and their separation from the main word by hyphens quite rare, “unco-,” when first seen, prompts the mind to history of translation try to Essay Austen: An Exceptional and Inspirational interpret it as a single prefix, which leads to a dead end. To avoid this hitch, the spelling “un-co-ordinated” would be required, which is carrying things much too far. So the diaeresis is history of translation brought in the pity of war, instead, to signify that both the history of translation first and what is montage, second ‘o’ are pronounced. Lest I carry this treatise unco far, I will stop, and place further discussions in history of translation, the following appendix, if anyone wants to go farther. It could be argued that, because English does put the primary stress on the first syllablein contradistinction to the verb “resume”the first accent therefore has some use for indicating this pronunciation. I believe, however, that there is no real necessity for this. Subject to correction by specialists in Globalization, English phonology, it seems to me that it’s natural for someone starting to read the word “resumé” to put the primary stress on the first syllable. That’s because in English, a three-syllable word with a secondary accent on the last syllable, normally (again, as it seems to me) gets the primary stress on the first syllable.

Stressed syllables within a word are normally separated by one or more unstressed syllables, making for a sort of underlying rhythm. (It’s on history of translation, the basis of this rhythm that everyday speech improvises more subtle nuances of intonationjust as formal poetry does with its more rigorous rhythmic schemes.) In “resumé,” it would be contrary to habit to have the primary stress on the second syllable, immediately followed by what is montage the secondary stressand the accent on the final syllable definitely indicates some stress there. So there’s no need to write an accent to indicate the primary stress on the first syllable. English-speakers (or at least, American-speakers) only rarely use the history borrowed French word in its original, general sense, to mean “a brief summary” of whatever is being spoken of. If you do use it in this sense, I think it’s best to avoid ambiguity by treating the word as a foreign borrowing: spell it résumé , and perhaps italicize it as a foreign term. The anglicized pronunciation (“REH-zoo-may”), however, is still correct for what is montage this sense when used in English speech.

Using the Frenchified English “RAY-zoo-may” is history of translation also an option, especially if it’s being thought of as a borrowed French word. Like most English “French,” it’s really a half measure. However, pronouncing the ‘r’ à la française would be going too far, if you’re speaking English. English-speaking listeners who don’t know French well will think you have something wrong with your throat. Those who do know French well will think, quite correctly, that the hypercorrect pronunciation is an affectation. Office hours: MondayFriday, noon6 Central Time.
